Recollections of the Big Band Era is an album by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington recorded in 1962 & 1963 by Bruce Swedien at Universal Recording Studios in Chicago for the Reprise label but not released until 1974 on the Atlantic label. The album features performances of compositions associated with big bands led by artists such as Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and others by the Duke Ellington's Orchestra.

James Kern Kyser (June 18, 1905 – July 23, 1985), known as Kay Kyser, was an American bandleader and radio personality of the 1930s and 1940s. James Kern Kyser was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the son of pharmacists Emily Royster (née Howell) and Paul Bynum Kyser. Kyser graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was also senior class president.

A lot of the Franklin Mint big-band albums paired jazz and non-jazz "sweet" bands, and though the jazz generally holds up better it's nice to hear some of the softer sounds of the era as well. Packaging is deluxe: sturdy hinged boxes covered in textured dull silver paper. Inside are photos, bios and data on each track that includes singers and soloists. The discs are what makes these collections so exceptional.
