Agalloch (/ˈæɡəˌlɑːx/) was an American black metal band from Portland, Oregon. Formed in 1995 by frontman John Haughm, they released five full-length albums, four EPs, two singles, one split single, two demos, four compilation albums and one live video album. They announced their disbandment in May 2016. Named after the resinous wood of the agarwood (Aquilaria agallocha), Agalloch began as the creation of Haughm and keyboardist Shane Breyer. In early 1996, the duo began composing material.

AGALLOCH is the most important band in the United States and simply one of the best bands in the world. - Keith, Metal Observer. Ashes could be seen as a combination of their first two, but with some progression. The first two tracks see the return of Agalloch's alt-rock influences, prominent on Pale Folklore, but diminished on The Mantle. Haughm also mostly uses his black metal vocals early on. Along with this, the album features a song trilogy, made up of the three parts of Our Fortress Is Burning, similar in length to the first album's She Painted Fire Across the Skyline. Tucked in the middle, Fire Above, Ice Below and Not Unlike the Waves remind me more of The Mantle, with a mix of metal and folk music.
