I got that Anne Briggs EP, Hazards of Lov. was captivated by this woman’s voice and what she did with it. Anne Briggs was and still is one of the most enigmatic figures of the ‘60‘s and ‘70s folk scene, perceived by many as a reclusive-genius and as a rebel for shunning commercial success. Her decision to leave the folk scene in the 70’s for a life in Scotland as conservation worker and market trader have if anything increased her mythical status, something she was pretty much unaware of when she was interviewed by The Guardian for the reissue of her 1971 album The Time Has Come. In 1963 Anne made her recording debut on Topic Records when she provided two songs for The Iron Muse, an album that proved to be one of the most influential records of the early British folk revival which featured songs from the mine, mill and factory.

The album was inspired by an Anne Briggs EP titled The Hazards of Love. On March 20, 2009, Entertainment Weekly began streaming the full album on imeem After the album's release, four filmmakers (Peter Sluszka, Julia Pott, Guilherme Marcondes, and Santa Maria) made an animated visual accompaniment to the music, Here Come the Waves: The Hazards of Love Visualized.

The Hazards of Love, inspired by UK folkie Anne Briggs' 1966 EP of the same name, has thick stoner-metal sludge and peat-bogged prog-folk arpeggios. Tucker Martine, who mixed The Crane Wife, produces exactly right for the material, focusing on the songs. I've got nothing to hold onto," Meloy sings.

The Hazards of Love is a rock opera, with all songs contributing to a unified narrative, similar to the use of recurring stories on the band’s previous album, The Crane Wife. The plot is a love story: a woman named Margaret (voiced by Becky Stark) falls in love with a shape-shifting boreal forest dweller named William (voiced by Colin Meloy).
