Nebraska is the sixth studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released on September 30, 1982, by Columbia Records. Sparsely recorded on a 4-track cassette tape Portastudio 144, the songs on Nebraska were originally intended as demos of songs to be recorded with the E Street Band. However, Springsteen ultimately decided to release the demos himself. Nebraska remains one of the most highly regarded albums in his catalog.

Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 solo album Nebraska has been called a folk album, and that’s true to an extent in both its acoustic setting and, on some of the material, in the construction of the songs. But folk songs in the traditional sense are in part defined by how they travel through culture, typically by being played in person for other people. Nebraska invites no such feeling of communion.

Released September 30, 1982. Even though Springsteen did not record the album in the same style of famous American lues singer Johnny Cash, he tried to find inspiration for the style and the themes of the album by listening repeatedly to the singles and the albums Cash published for his first label, the Sun Records. Those records featured songs talking about the poors, the beaten down, the prisoners.

But Bruce Springsteen was the first person to act on that theory, when he opted to release the demo versions of his latest songs, recorded with only acoustic or electric guitar, harmonica, and vocals, as his sixth album, Nebraska. It was really the content that dictated the approach, however. Nebraska's ten songs marked a departure for Springsteen, even as they took him farther down a road he'd already been traveling. Gradually, his songs became darker and more pessimistic, and those on Nebraska marked a new low. They also found him branching out into better developed stories

Muderous, cold, and bleak, Nebraska captures the pain and turns it into timeless songs for the ages. Muderous, cold, and bleak, Nebraska captures the pain and turns it into timeless songs for the ages. Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen is on Rolling Stone Magazines list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. A demo tape," you say" Well yes, a demo tape.

Some of the best song writing you will ever hear and such a great display of Springsteen as a singer-songwriter. The only way that you could go through this whole album and not feel anything is if you are a hollow, apathetic monster or sumthin. 100. Ranking the songs: 10. State Trooper 9. My Father's House 8. Nebraska is an acoustic triumph, a basic folk album on which Springsteen has stripped his art down to the core. It’s as harrowing as Darkness on the Edge of Town, but more measured. Every small touch speaks volumes: the delicacy of the acoustic guitars, the blurred sting of the electric guitars, the spare, grim images. On Nebraska, violent death is his starting point. The title track is an audacious, scary beginning. Naive, simple and telling, it is the caption beneath Bruce Springsteen’s abrasive, clouded and ultimately glorious portrait of America. Notes

This initial US CD release of "Nebraska" utilizes a very narrow stereo mix that was mistakenly issued on the first Japanese CD release, in 1985. The approved mix, which replaced this version after the initial press run, is mono.

It should be emphasized that the stereo spread is very subtle, being mostly confined to the applied echo, which tends to slightly deepen the sound of the album. The most obvious difference between the two versions is the length of the song "My Father's House", which on the stereo mix contains a quiet keyboard coda that extends the length of the song to 5:35. There is also a difference in pitch between many songs that is obvious if one has a true mono disc for comparison.

Disc is made in Japan.

Notes

Original Japanese pressing. The very first CD release of "Nebraska" anywhere in the world. These long-deleted initial copies included an extra 28 seconds of synthesizer coda on "My Father's House" due to a different master tape used; making for a total playing time of 5:35 instead of the standard 5:07. Came with red obi strip.
