Charity Brown began singing with local bands while still in high school in Kitchener, Ontario in the late 60s. She performed and recorded under the name Phyllis Brown until 1973. Around 1970 she became the lead vocalist for Rain, a popular Kitchener-based rock band. Rain scored a hit in Canada in 1971 with "Out of My Mind", written by Greg Hambleton and released on Axe Records. She left Rain in 1973 to focus on her solo career. Her Motown-flavoured brand of white soul was produced by Harry Hinde and was strong enough to secure her a contract with A&M Records  . Ellison recorded "Stay with Me" at a last-minute booking, following a studio cancellation by Frank Sinatra. With a 46-piece orchestra already hired, Warner Bros. Records asked Ragovoy, with two days' notice, to take over the session at no cost.

Stay with Me Tonight is the second album from Jeffrey Osborne, released in 1983 on A&M Records. The album reached on the Billboard 200 albums chart and on the R&B album chart. The title track, "Stay With Me Tonight" charted at on the R&B Singles Chart in 1983. The other three singles, "Don't You Get So Mad," "We're Going All The Way" and "Plane Love" also reached and on the R&B chart respectively. Singer Charity Brown's real name is Phyllis Boltz. She was born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and started performing professionally in the '60s. She was in her tender teens at the time. Her first long-running membership was with a group called Rain. Brown spent half a decade with the group, recording a number of singles and a self-titled album. Her work with Rain earned Brown her first spot on the Top Ten charts with the single Out of My Mind. In 1973, Brown began working under the stage name Phyllis Brown. Brown also finished four full-length albums, Charity Brown in 1975, Rock Me in 1976, and Stay With Me in 1977. One best-of album also appeared in 1977. Brown's music was a strong mix of both RB and pop, what many label as Motown style. It compares to that of artists like Kim Weston, Gladys Knight, and Tammi Terrell.
