Foxbase Alpha is the first album by British band Saint Etienne, released in 1991. The album was recorded in a style which drew on the club culture and house music of the time, but also incorporates the group's characteristic love of 1960s pop, with tracks also bridged by samples from films or by short songs. At the time of recording, Sarah Cracknell was not fully part of the group, and as a result she does not sing on "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", which is sung by Moira Lambert.

Saint Etienne’s 1992 debut carefully balances the previous decade’s indie-pop guitars, sweetly sung melodies, breezy moods-with the shuffling breakbeats and electronic accents of acid house. She’s the One summons the ’60s with sparkling tambourines and samples of The Four Tops and The Crystals, and Carnt Sleep balances airy vocals with a skeletal dub-reggae rhythm section. The highlight is Only Love Can Break Your Heart, which unexpectedly reimagines Neil Young’s song as lilting, breakbeat-driven piano house, at once carefree and wistful. Foxbase Alpha Saint Etienne.

Despite a handful of classic pop singles, Saint Etienne's debut album, Foxbase Alpha, is a tentative fusion of club culture and swinging '60s pop. Lead vocalist Sarah Cracknell hasn't been fully integrated into the band's lineup - she doesn't even sing on their astonishing Euro-disco cover of Neil Young's "Only Love Will Break Your Heart," which is not only cleverly ironic, but also works - yet the filler remains thoroughly enjoyable, even if it rarely reaches the heights of the.

Foxbase Alpha is the debut album by British band Saint Etienne, released in 1991. The album was recorded in a style which is close to the house music sound of the time, but songs like Nothing Can Stop Us and Wilson display the group's characteristic love of '60s pop and several samples. Longer songs like Stoned to Say the Least and Like the Swallow are reminiscent of ambient house akin to The Orb. Like its follow-up So Tough, Foxbase Alpha's songs are bridged by samples from films or by short songs

Although the melodies were mostly pop, the backing tracks had an acid house feel that was driven by propulsive and repetitive drum beats and bass lines. Intermittently throughout the songs, vocals, piano washes, and trumpet fills were thrown on top of these acid house backing tracks.

Errm, this is still available from the bands website for £50? So why charge £65 for it...

I don't have any other pressing to compare it to, but the 45 rpm 2 LP version here sounds quiet and nice, but still not super dynamic. I guess there's just not huge punch in the original recordings. There is something kind of wrong about splitting this LP across 4 sides. The additional interruptions seem to weaken the whole thing. As much as I like this album and this pressing's good sound, I probably would have done better to save some money, skip "Remains of the Day" etc. and just buy the 2016 Heavenly LP RE.

Not sure why it's that strange of comment... I agree with the reservations about splitting this across 4 sides. It's not that long of an album, and is built to flow with all of its interludes, so stretching it feels like it loses some of the charm. And while "Remains" is nice, it would have been much better to have more to entice buyers than just one unreleased demo and some (no longer) rare tracks "new to vinyl but readily available many times otherwise." The 2x45 RPM strategy frankly seems like a gimmick with that in mind. I love Saint Etienne and squeal with any genuinely new content, but the well seems to have run dry for this era.

Strange comment. The pressing is very good and The Remains of the Day album and the whole box package is absolutely stunning. Bad idea to skip this in my opinion.

So, on the "Remains Of The Day" vinyl, you get the Sarah Cracknell vocal version of "Kiss And Make Up" but when you download the digital tracks you get the Original 12" Mix with Donna Savage singing. A little error I guess.
Bludsong
It wouldn't be a proper St Etienne deluxe edition without the odd error thrown in, would it? ;-)
