Tchaikovsky, Orchestra Filarmonica Di New York, Carnegie Hall, G. Szell. Tchaikovsky, Orchestra Filarmonica Di New York, Carnegie Hall, G. Szell - Concerto Per Piano . New York, 53 (LP).
Tchaikovsky wanted to dedicate the concerto to Iosif Kotek, but felt constrained by the gossip this would undoubtedly cause about the true nature of his relationship with the younger man. (They were almost certainly lovers at one point, and Tchaikovsky was always at pains to disguise his homosexuality from the general public. In 1881, he broke with Kotek after he refused to play the Violin Concerto, believing it was poorly received and would do damage to his budding career. In the 1947 movie Carnegie Hall the first movement is performed by Jascha Heifetz with Fritz Reiner conducting the New York Philharmonic. The concerto is used in the soundtrack to the documentary film Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

Recorded 2 February 1948 Carnegie Hall, New York City. Total duration: 79:52 (CD) & 92:59 (Download). The piano recital given by Vladimir Horowitz last night in Carnegie Hall, attended by as many as the law would allow in the place, was testimony equally to his distinguished art and to the high intelligence of his public. The program provided nothing of a spectacular character. The performances were those of a master seeking humbly and eagerly for the perfect proportion, the complete realization of the composer’s thought, and never descending to artificial effects or mere technical deeds of derring-do to astonish an audience.
