Chronicles is the first compilation album by Steve Winwood as a solo artist. The album contains some of his major hits up to this point and new remixes produced by Tom Lord-Alge, who had helped commercialize Winwood's sound on his previous album Back in the High Life. One track, "Valerie", was originally released as a single for Winwood's 1982 album, Talking Back to the Night

Steve Winwood's Chronicles presents an extremely brief overview of his material, beginning with Arc of a Diver and including tracks from 1982's Talking Back to the Night and 1986's Back in the High Life release. While songs such as "Higher Love," "While You See a Chance," and "Talking Back to the Night" are surely give-ins, the collection suffers from the absence of "Freedom Overspill," "The Finer Things," and "Back in the High Life Again," which were all Top 20 hits for Winwood throughout 1987. As a quick listen, this album stands up fairly well, but for those who prefer the "in depth," there's always the four-CD retrospective entitled The Finer Things, which focuses on Winwood's solo career in greater detail, but also includes some of his work from Traffic, the Spencer Davis Group, and Blind Faith.

I was enjoying Steve Winwood's music while living in Europe, before he became mainstream here in the U S -I prefer that music. I was debating between Chronicles and one of his collections,not sure I made the best choice. Yea another Steve Winwood album. Like many artist's this disc has some tracks form other Cd's. But as always there's always that 1 or 2 songs that can only be found on this Cd.
