Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956. Karajan promoted promising talents even beyond that, including Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa and the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Concerned about the next generation of musicians, he initiated the Orchestra Academy in 1972: it prepares prospective orchestra musicians to work in a professional orchestra. Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker were considered a dream team.
Anne-Sophie Mutter and Seiji Ozawa on Herbert Von Karajan.
1. Principal conductor. Kirill Petrenko (designate). The Berlin Philharmonic (German: Berliner Philharmoniker) is a German orchestra based in Berlin. It is traditionally ranked as being in the top handful of orchestras in the world, distinguished amongst peers for its virtuosic and compelling sound. The orchestra’s history has always been tied up with its chief conductors, many of whom have been authoritative and controversial characters, such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan.
Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the few baroque composers whose works Herbert von Karajan recorded, with the conductor specializing primarily in Classical and Romantic repertoire. This rare footage of the 1984 New Year’s concert features the Berliner Philharmoniker and Karajan in a two-part program. First they perform Bach’s Violin Concerto in E Major with the brilliant Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist.
