Category: Electronic, Rock Style: Alternative Rock, Downtempo Year: 1989 Notes: Bootleg remix 12" issued in 1989 coupling the then-recent Edie Brickell hit "What I Am" with the looped beat used in "Keep On Movin'" by Soul II Soul. This was later sampled by Andrew Weatherall for use in the song "Loaded" by Primal Scream. Despite the remix title, the remix is by Mad Magic DJ's and not Soul II Soul. Genre: Electronic, Rock. Musician: Edie Brickell. Album's name: What I Am (Soul II Soul Remix).

Still, their quick fade (they broke up in 1991) prevented Geffen Records from issuing a hits compilation domestically. Hip-O's Ultimate Collection takes advantage of the group's relatively brief renown to assemble an album largely devoted to rarities and unreleased material.

It's worth noting, for anyone interested in getting this: *SOUL II SOUL DID NOT DO THIS REMIX*. It explicitly states on the version with info on the label that the "Mad Magic DJ's" (whoever they were) did. The title of the remix is simply due to the familiar beat, also used in Soul II Soul's "Keep On Movin'" and Primal Scream's "Loaded". Given that this boot surfaced in 1989, if it *was* a Soul II Soul mix, it would be relatively easy to hear the sound of Nellee Hooper's production and remix style in it. Nellee Hooper was heavily involved in all Soul II Soul mixes and sound in 1989; His aesthetic of that era was subtle and delicate, everything had a remarkably consistent signature sound. However, this "What I am" remix has no discernable Nellee Hooper production style to it whatsoever. It's pretty lackluster as far as remixes go, since it just drops the drum loops under the original song. Both elements here are good (the original Edie Brickell song and the nice looped beat), but does it really add enough to merit much consideration? Eh. Not really. If I want to hear "What I Am", I'll listen to that. And If I want to hear this particular beat looped to support fantastic and fitting music, I'll listen to "Keep On Movin'" or "Loaded". Simple as that! If anyone can provide evidence that Soul II Soul actually truly did this remix (other than unofficial websites touting this as Soul II Soul based on fabricated knowledge — there are tons of these out there, don't believe fuzzy information off the internet) I'll happily change my review. And be very surprised (and a bit let down that Nellee and Jazzie B could put out something so shoddy and uninspired.) Also, one amazing fact about this bootleg: Andrew Weatherall sampled the beat from this record and used it in Primal Scream's breakthrough single "Loaded", and arguably launched a whole new style of electronic/rock hybrid indie dance.
