Sam Sweeney (born 27 February 1989 in Nottingham) is a multi-instrumental English folk musician. Sweeney started playing the fiddle at age six, and first performed as a soloist at folk festivals in 2001. From 2002 to 2010 Sweeney was part of the East Midlands-based folk band Kerfuffle, playing fiddle, viola, and cajon, and singing. When Kerfuffle disbanded, Sam continued playing with accordion player and singer Hannah James as the duo Hannah James and Sam Sweeney.

While his face may be familiar as a member of that all-conquering group, Bellowhead, the fiddler Sam Sweeney has long enjoyed a quietly fruitful partnership with Hannah James, a petite accordionist and singer who works with Maddy Prior, among many others, and has also been known to unleash some vivacious clog-dancing.
Sweeney may be familiar as a member of that freewheeling folk band Bellowhead, but his partnership with the accordionist and singer Hannah James brings out his more intimate side. From the hypnotic opener, a Purcell hornpipe, their collaboration works its way through an atmospheric series of traditional songs and instrumentals. Sweeney switches between fiddle, viola, nyckelharpa and bagpipes, while the undemonstrative James adds ultra-discreet foot percussion. She brings a touch of girlish mischief to The Farmer’s Cursed Wife, a tale of a scold who is too much even for the devil himself.
