The classic houndstooth pattern is an example of a tessellation. A smaller-scale version of the pattern can be referred to as puppytooth.

It’s name comes from French – pied de poule, so called because this pattern usually resembles chicken feet. In English, it’s called ‘houndstooth’; it’s created from the intersection of the vertical and horizontal threads, usually in black and white. The pattern of this distinctive sartorial fabric recalls the severe elegance of the 50s – it’s ideal for a sophisticated woman, but today it’s been reinvented with the use of different fabrics and shapes.
