Charlie Poole With The North Carolina Ramblers. Curious misprint on the front sleeve: "A Lighter Shade Of Blue Of Blue" doesn't make sense. On the discs the title is printed as "A Lighter Shade Of Blue", which makes perfect sense.

White Country Blues 1926-1938: A Lighter Shade of Blue is an excellent, revealing 48-track, double-disc collection culled from the Columbia, American and OKeh vaults. That is one of the many reasons why White Country Blues is invaluable. It's a thoughtfully compiled and thorough historical reissue that presents a wealth of rare, fascinating material.

White Country Blues collects songs by white artists that exhibit a marked Afro-American influence. It includes straight covers, such as Roy Acuff’s groundbreaking adaptation of bluesman Sylvester Weaver’s Guitar Blues, and tunes that only evoke the blues in spirit, as with the songs of Bill and Cliff Carlisle, whose rowdy, often-salacious numbers conjure the freewheeling ethos of African-American medicine show performers. In the ‘20s and ‘30s, records by African-American performers-be they gospel, blues, jazz, or pop-were designated race records," while records by rural white artists would fall under the rubric hillbilly music. These artificial categories handily concealed the wealth of cultural intermingling that was taking place between the white and African-American musical communities during this period.

Curious misprint on the front sleeve: "A Lighter Shade Of Blue Of Blue" doesn't make sense. On the discs the title is printed as "A Lighter Shade Of Blue", which makes perfect sense. The mistake is duplicated across all three versions, so someone at the record co. didn't proof read the copy properly (unless " Lighter Shade Of Blue Of Blue" means something that I don't understand).
