The Ruler's Back is the second studio album by British-American rapper Slick Rick, released July 2, 1991, on Def Jam Recordings. It features production from Vance Wright, Slick Rick and Mr. Lee. The album and its music videos were quickly recorded and filmed before Slick Rick was sentenced to a 5-year prison term. Upon its release, The Ruler's Back achieved notable chart success, peaking at number 29 on the Billboard 200, and number 18 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart
The Ruler’s Back Lyrics. Halt, who goes yonder?" "It is I, sire, Richard of Nottingham" "Well, speak up man, what is it?" "News from the east, sire, Rick the Ruler has returned!" Scratches: Stop Lyin'! Gather 'round party goers as if your still livin' And get on down to the old Slick rhythm Now this one here is called the Ruler my dear It's a mere party booster that will set things clear It's a hundred percent proof from champions of truth And if you feel you need spirit I'll bring back your youth Relax.
Regardless, this is a rock-solid, if woefully overlooked, album that slipped between the cracks. Produced by Slick and longtime collaborator Vance Wright, it's a forgotten gem from one of the best lyricists ever. The Ruler's Back Slick Rick. Everybody knows it, everybody loves it, and the music will last for generations to come. The flipside is: everything you do afterward will be compared against it. Slick Rick already had two landmark songs ("The Show" and "La Di Da Di," both with Doug E. Fresh) when he released his first album, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, in 1988. With his chilled-out, accented flow, impeccable storytelling skills, signature eyepatch, and gold-drenched, Mr. T–times–10 fashion sense, Slick Rick became an international sensation.

To think of the album as anything other than a confused, transitional effort would be inaccurate, but it does not follow that it isn't an intriguing record. The messiness of its execution perfectly encapsulates the sort of turmoil Slick Rick was experiencing in his life at the time, and the music pulls the listener into that sort of tangled experience. Both Vance Wright's production and Slick Rick's rapping sound pressed for time, and they rush through the songs with a whip-lashing intensity. It can be a disorienting listen, but it is also a pure adrenaline rush.

In a new interview with Billboard, Slick Rick talks about the 30th anniversary of his debut album 'The Great Adventures of Slick Rick' and his thoughts on new rappers today. For Rick, the homage is bittersweet, considering younger entertainers like Tyson Beckford and Aventura have already been inducted and have theoretically done far less than The Ruler. However, the England-born rapper was only granted . citizenship two years ago, following decades of attempts that were seemingly thwarted due to a six-year prison bid. Still, Slick Rick has put on for the BX since hip-hop’s inception, and his groundbreaking efforts were finally recognized.
Underrated second album. Short, but unlike Behind Bars, not blatantly unfinished. Ricky D's storytelling perhaps isn't quite as captivating as on his debut album, but the beats are much less cheesy and as an overall listen it holds up pretty well. This guy should've released ten albums between 88 and 99. He only released four.
