Hounds of Love is the fifth studio album by English singer-songwriter and musician Kate Bush, released by EMI Records on 16 September 1985. It was a commercial success and marked a return to the public eye for Bush after the relatively poor sales of her previous album, 1982's The Dreaming. The album's lead single, "Running Up That Hill", became one of Bush's biggest hits. The album's first side produced three further successful singles, "Cloudbusting", "Hounds of Love", and "The Big Sky".

Fifth album by Kate Bush, released by EMI Records on 16 September 1985. Two years in the making, the album was written, composed and produced by Kate. Following the disappointing performance of her fourth album The Dreaming and its singles, executives at Bush's label were concerned about sales largely due to the long time period it took to produce the album. It is considered by many fans and music critics to be Bush's best album, and has been regularly voted one of the greatest albums of all time. Ronnie Randall wrote in Sounds: "Dramatic moving, and wildly, unashamedly, beautifully romantic. Jane Solanas in NME added: "It's an obvious progression of the skill shown on The Dreaming.

Kate Bush's strongest album to date also marked her breakthrough into the American charts, and yielded a set of dazzling videos as well as an enviable body of hits, spearheaded by "Running Up That Hill," her biggest single since "Wuthering Heights. I don't know if I have ever had an album grow on me as much as Hounds of Love has. Yes, it has some of the basic 80's synths and song structures, but there is so much passion and emotion put into these tracks. Kate Bush's vocals are impeccable, and put over the sweet, dreamy instrumentals which were 100% produced by her, the final result is a sensationally beautiful album. fav tracks: Cloudbusting (standout), The Big Sky, Waking the Witch, Jig of Life.

Kate Bush was an oddity when she burst onto the popular music scene in the late 70's, famously discovered by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd in 1978 backed by a bunch of prog rock veterans she released debut album The Kick Inside. Along with two famous music videos (featuring both a white and red dress), the lead single Wuthering Heights was a weird blend of progressive rock, classical and literary influences that demonstrated a raw, unusual talent beyond her years. Hounds of Love is a strange album. The first half of the album saw a number of great pop singles but on the later half Kate really extended herself with hit or miss experimentation that still kept within songwriting boundaries enough to not feel out of place. As an overall package, it is a remarkable effort but it is hard to believe it enjoyed the commercial success that it did sometimes when you listen to patchier cuts like Waking the Witch.

When Kate Bush debuted in early 1978 with Wuthering Heights, arguably pop’s most uncanny ballad, she arrived as England’s first and perhaps only out-of-the-box pop genius. But by 1985, the year of Hounds of Love, she needed to reaffirm her appeal. Thanks to MTV, UK pop had exploded in worldwide popularity since The Dreaming, her self-produced record that EMI nearly returned for lacking potential singles; its only hit, Sat in Your Lap, was 15 months old by the time the album finally reached stores in 1982. Raging and experimental, it was akin to Public Image Ltd. and Siouxsie and the Banshees, not early Sheena Easton, and sold far less than its predecessors. Strangely enough, Hounds of Love was no less complicated in its structure, imagery, and extra-musical references (even lifting a line of dialogue from Jacques Tourneur's Curse of the Demon for the intro of the title song) than The Dreaming, which had been roundly criticized for being too ambitious and complex.

Hounds of Love is the fifth studio album by singer, songwriter and producer Kate Bush. Widely considered her magnum opus, it lit another rocket under Bush’s career (following the she’s gone mad response of her previous record) and went onto finally break the US market alongside becoming her best-selling album. Split across 2 discs, the album incorporates 2 very different sections. The first to be recorded in Bush’s own home studio, the album is a drastic departure from The Dreaming. Featuring more honed production and techniques, it allowed Bush to leave the bustle of London and retreat back into the countryside, away from the grips of her label EMI. Instead of crowded cityscapes, songs were written gazing across scenery and allowed the harsh mankind’s screwing things up energy to depart in favour of a more positive one.
