Album · 2014 · 11 Songs. Skaters have a long way to go before joining such Big Apple luminaries as The Ramones and Blondie, but with their debut album they've taken the first step: they've written a collection of songs all about what it's like to be young in New York City (one's even called "To Be Young in NYC"). Mixing a palette of sounds as diverse as the record's titular borough-garage rock, new wave, dub, reggae, electro-the four-piece paint a vivid picture of the long nights and bleary-eyed mornings that characterize coming of age in a city that never sleeps.

Classic New York rock made "new" again. This is the first of many conversation snippets and other day-in-the-life fragments that open songs on SKATERS’ debut album, Manhattan. These traces of city as text are a not so subtle indicator that SKATERS are writing of, about, and within New York City. Their album becomes something like a living document (or shifting palimpsest) where the city fuels the art and vice versa. By tying together sounds, stories, and influences from their lives, SKATERS assembled a portrait of the young man’s rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle in New York City.
The Christmas Album was the fourteenth album by The Manhattan Transfer, released in 1992 on Columbia Records. The album also includes "Good Night", the only Beatles song the Manhattan Transfer has recorded. Snowfall" (Claude Thornhill, Ruth Thornhill) (5:35). Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" (Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn) (4:34).
The New York rock quartet Skaters’ debut album about living in Manhattan is titled Manhattan. If the Strokes savvily refashioned NYC iconoclasts like the Velvet Underground and Television as dance-party pop music, Manhattan is what’s become of your head-shop CBGB t-shirt after another 12 years of laundromat visits. Last week, the Village Voice published its list of the 50 Most NYC Albums Ever, a feature that illustrated the myriad ways-from West Side Story to Ramones to On the 6-in which the five boroughs have been mythologized in song over the past 60-odd years.
