Decipher is the second album by Dutch symphonic metal band After Forever, released in 2001. In this album, the band make use of live classical instruments and a complete choir to back up the soprano voice of lead singer Floor Jansen. Thrown in the mix are also a duet of soprano and tenor voices in "Imperfect Tenses" and the recording of the late Israeli PM Yizhak Rabin voice during the Peace treaty signing ceremony on October 26, 1994 on "Forlorn Hope".

After Forever's second album, 2001's Decipher, saw the Dutch sextet making great strides toward developing a distinctive and personal sound, and it vaulted them to the very forefront of Europe's operatic metal scene to boot.

This is the After Forever album that everyone praises, and I guess I can see why, as it's a very complex, driving and masterfully written album, but it just leaves me cold. With Decipher, After Forever takes a step further in the gothic metal scene. Prison of Desire was a good debut, but Decipher simply is better that its predecessor. Heavy songs full of real classical arrangements without becoming epic as Rhapsody.

Here's where After Forever comes in. A goth/symphonic metal band from the Netherlands, they were one of the best of female fronted goth metal. Even from a very young age, the band showed their talents as songwriters. Their music was epic, and worthy of being played by bands twice their age. From their debut in 2000 all the way up to today, the band has showed no signs of slowing down and continue to release album after album, each as good (if not better) than the last. Decipher, simply put, is an amazing album. Considering the average age of the band members was 19 when it was recorded/released, it was almost unheard of. The band showed their promise as songwriters, and it paid off on this album. With an epic quality found in only a select few, the album radiated originality. The undoubted best part of the band is the superb vocals laid down by Floor Jansen.
