Hilding Rosenberg, who was to be Lidholm’s composition teacher for two years, was especially important in leading studies into Hindemith, Stravinsky and other modern composers. Thus evolved what was later to be called the Måndagsgrupp. In 1964, Lidholm decided to leave his post at Swedish Radio and succeed Karl-Birger Blomdahl as professor of composition (a ten-year, non-renewable appointment) at the Musikhogskola. Due to his teaching duties, he produced just four works for the period 1965-1975. He began exploring the challenges of a medium for which he had not yet written, opera. Karl-Birger Blomdahl (19 October 1916 – 14 June 1968) was a Swedish composer and conductor born in Växjö. He was educated in biochemistry, but was primarily active in music and by his experimental compositions he became one of the big names in Swedish modernism. His teachers included Hilding Rosenberg. He died in Kungsängen, Stockholm. His third symphony, Facettes – a work in one subdivided movement as a twelve-tone variation-form piece – from 1950 is a major contribution to the repertoire

The works by Alfven, Rosenberg and Blomdahl are all short one movement works, but each is effective for its brief moment. Alfen's Cow Girl Dance is all but a square dance with its rural fiddling and is a popular encore piece. The other two pieces are both steeped in melancholy with the Rosenberg "Small Piece for cello and strings" truly elegaic. Blomdahl's "Adagio" is very cinematic in feeling like a long farewell. The roman Concerto for oboe d'amore is the odd work here.
