Release on October 31, 2006, the album continues the band’s progression from the crushing, riff-heavy sound of their early work to the more textural, ambient compositions that came to define their later sound. It also marks Aaron Turner’s continued growth as a singer and lyricist, with many passages sung cleanly, without Aaron’s signature growling vocals that can be heard in many of his other projects. Every album from the band has different sound that suits its concept and highlights its specific mood. In the Absence of Truth is obviously not an exception. As this is their most "post" and least "metal" record, the sound is more airy and organic than ever before. Its oneiric, gloomy atmosphere is highlighted with organic guitar distortion and naturally sounding drums. With the release of In the Absence of Truth, Isis has justly earned the comparison as ‘the Sigur Rós of metal’. Isis has strayed further from their metal roots than ever, finally crossing the boundary into post-rock. Clean vocals are more prevalent and higher in the mix than any of Isis’ other albums, but work extremely well with Isis’ developed sound.

The album was released on the 30th of October 2006 through Ipecac Recordings and produced by Isis and Matt Bayles. The music further explores the direction that Isis began on Oceanic (2002) and later perfected on Panopticon (2004) Which means post metal with heavy slow riffs and mellow atmospheric post rock sections. While it�s obvious that Isis still kneel at the altar of Neurosis and probably always will, I find that the music on In The Absence Of Truth explores new ground too and Isis is still a very worthy listen for fans of the genre.

Another aspect of In the Absence of Truth that really makes it stick out like a sore thumb is the substantial emphasis on elegant playing rather than the in your face style the band normally embodies so well. Like Neurosis, their innovative take on metal happens to be what makes them so amazing, but throwing a chunk of those elements away was indeed a risky move that paid off more than the band could have possibly imagined. These songs prove how dynamic the band can truly be as a whole and how this album has something every fan could want from an Isis record. It's an accumulation of everything the band can do so exceptionally well into the very last song. Out of the band’s five closers, Garden of Light exists as the one that holds the most weight.
