Depeche Mode has become like that ex-girlfriend (or boyfriend) that you have very fond memories of and that trades on your past affections. Inexplicably, and against your better judgement, you check in from time to time, and are shocked (each time) by how they've changed and how little you now have in common. There are very, very (very) tiny sparks of past greatness, subsumed by the greater muddle of banality.Thus is modern-day Depeche Mode.

It's quite sad, a bit, to read negative comments about a band which I do like, but I can't find no other than the whole truth about the current-day band.Unlike, for example: Pet Shop Boys, which is another band which I truly like a lot, Depeche Mode has struggled to build an album which sparks moments of joy and interest in me as a listener. I find the Ben Hillier albums to be quite bland and uninspired, although I like "Playing The Angel". It has that Violator-esque feel of the good times Depeche Mode was one of the greatest bands of the moment.Ultimately, let's just hope Depeche Mode can regain its style and confidence into building an album which reminds us why they were and can be one of the greatest synthpop bands of the world. Just, without Hillier...
