Hawkwind is the self-titled debut album by Hawkwind, released in 1970, originally on Liberty Records, later reissued on Sunset Records. This album is historic since it is one of the first space rock LPs. The Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, who was looking for a new venture after leaving the band, was pulled into Hawkwind playing some gigs and producing this album. After several unsuccessful attempts to capture the band's sound in the studio, it was decided simply to record it live in the studio.

Hawkwind Zoo, Sonic Assassins, Hawklords, Psychedelic Warriors, Group X, Hawkwind Light Orchestra, The Elves of Silbury Hill. This album offered a refinement of the band's image and philosophy courtesy of graphic artist Barney Bubbles and underground press writer Robert Calvert, as depicted in the accompanying Hawklog booklet, which would be further developed into the Space Ritual stage show. Science fiction author Michael Moorcock and dancer Stacia also started contributing to the band. The show featured dancers Stacia and Miss Renee typically performing either topless or wearing only body paint, mime artist Tony Carrera and a light show by Liquid Len and was recorded on the elaborate package Space Ritual.

JD Twitch and JG Wilkes have long worn their interest in the New Beat sound on their sleeves, even doing an album-long mix for Ghent's legendary R&S records, and it's not hard to guess the grounds for their inspiration, as the sound is a feverish hybrid that neatly befits the Optimo boys' own genre-fuck mixing style.

The name Sonic Assassins had originally been coined by Michael Moorcock to describe Hawkwind. This band played one gig, at the Barnstaple Queens Hall on December 23, 1977, with a day of overdubs being added some time later at Griffin ' s studio  . The set was to be released as an album, but it was eventually released only on various EPs and compilations
