Speak & Spell is Depeche Mode’s debut album. It got recorded in the year 1981 and released on October 5, 1981. The whole album got recorded at the Blackwing Studios in London. The album got re-released on CD in 1988. He wanted to be in control. That’s the only album where the songs had already been performed for a year and a half beforehand, and we went into the studio and recorded them as we would live. I think Daniel saw us as a cross between the Ramones and the Beach Boys, in an electronic way – fast and short with really simple riffs. We were courted by major labels and were very suspicious of signing a deal that meant five albums.
Speak & Spell is the debut studio album by the English electronic band Depeche Mode, released on 5 October 1981 by Mute Records. The album peaked at number 10 in the UK Albums Chart. This is the band's only album with Vince Clarke and as a result, was much lighter in tone than future Depeche Mode albums. The album is significantly lighter in tone and melody than their later work, a direction which can largely be attributed to Clarke's writing. After he left, Martin Gore took over songwriting duties, writing almost all of the band's material. Later albums written by him would explore darker subjects and melodies. The album title alludes to the then-popular "Speak & Spell" electronic toy.

The album is significantly lighter in tone due Clarke’s writing- which changed when Martin Gore took over songwriting duties from A Broken Frame onward. The track Photographic has an alternate version appears on the Some Bizarre Album, due to that track being recorded first and ultimately with the help of Some Bizarre Records owner Stephen John Pearce, led to the signing with Mute Records, after a good word.

℗ 1982 PolyGramMFD. by G.P.I. S.A. 410
Made in Greece.
First Category on labels, 2nd on cover.
In this version there's 'Printed By' credit on bottom right of back sleeve, opposed to Depeche Mode - Speak & Spell that does not appear anywhere. Furthermore, the background of back sleeve is grey, not black.
This is most probably the 1st Greek issue.
