Marino Zuccheri - Milan Rai Studio di Fonologia Musicale 1955-83 album flac

The Studio di fonologia musicale di Radio Milano was established 1955 in Milan following a joint initiative by Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna. The aim was to create a third European facility for experimental electronic contemporary classical music after the Studio für elektronische Musik des WDR in Cologne and the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris. The studio closed on 28 February 1983. The refurbished equipment is now exhibited at the Museum of Musical Instruments in the Sforza Castle, Milan.

Marino Zuccheri, the sound engineer of the RAI Studio of Fonologia in Milan. Illustrious figures in the history of contemporary music arrived there with State grants; but after many months, they still couldn’t figure out how to handle the machines. Then Marino (who, working with Berio and Maderna, had become a wizard), started mixing tapes and producing electronic sounds: that is why some of the compositions now being performed all over the world are by Marino Zuccheri.

Firmly rooted in his background as the technical expert of Milan’s enviably well-stocked RAI Studio di Fonologia Musicale - he was the one person who could handle the studio’s tapes, oscillators and unwieldy machines, and would inevitably cross paths with artists with wedges of state funding, but no idea of how to use the gear.

In 2017 the Milan Museum of 20th Century produced an exhibition and a series of seminars and concerts dedicated to the figure of Marino Zuccheri and his experience at the Rai Studio di Fonologia, where he spent his entire working life, from 1955 to 1983 (the Studio would be closed in 1986)
