Dechristianize is the fifth album by American death metal band Vital Remains. It was released on August 22, 2003. The lyrics deal with the Dechristianization of France during the French Revolution. The intro - "Let the Killing Begin" - features a section of Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" and voices from the movie The Greatest Story Ever Told. This album was the first to feature Deicide vocalist Glen Benton, and is generally considered to be the band's breakthrough album. All songs by Tony Lazaro and Dave Suzuki.

Vital Remains has long been one of the forefathers in the Death Metal scene, having debuted in 1989 with their classic "Reduced To Ashes" demo. However, it seems like Let Us Pray, their debut album on Deaf/Peaceville Records in 1992 (Released domestically on Grind Core International), never really got a lot of attention from many fans in the scene. You'd always hear people espousing the virtues of bands like Cannibal Corpse (whose first three albums, in my opinion, can't even come closing to touching VR's debut), and all of the other clone shit bands that were popping.

Album opener "War In Paradise" cements Vital Remains as being one of the genre's best bands, along with Morbid Angel and Death. The key to this collection of beautifully composed and carefully paced tracks is, without a doubt, guitarist Tony Lazaro. His skill on his instrument is absolutely undeniable, and his eerie melodies and riffs act as the basis for Vital Remains to construct the rest of their sound around. The band choose to utilize longer song lengths, with most tracks falling around the six minute mark, which alone seperate the band from most of their contemporaries. Let Us Pray takes the best parts of the best bands around at the same time, including Possessed, early Slayer, early Death and Morbid Angel to create a unique sound, and the album is incredibly strong, especially for a debut. Always uncompromising and never forgiving, it is a necessity for every death metal fan.
