The music on this disc was a major influence in launching the revival of New Orleans-style jazz although the group (which includes trumpeters Lu Watters and Bob Scobey, trombonist Turk Murphy, clarinetist Ellis Horne and pianist Wally Rose) actually sounded looser in their 1946 recordings. The first volume of Lu Watters at Hambone Kelly's (JASMCD2571) presented 20 of the recordings made at that location. This CD provides the remaining 16 recordings made by the Yerba Buena Jazz Band together with the 8 sides by the Clancy Hayes Washboard Band on which Lu Watters played the washboard rather than his usual trumpet. Lu Watters & the Yerba Buena Jazz Band is the name of the Traditional Jazz revival band founded by Lu Watters. Notable members include singer and banjoist Clancy Hayes (from 1938 to 1940); clarinetist Bob Helm; trumpeter Bob Scobey; trombonist Turk Murphy; tubist/bassist Dick Lammi; and Watters himself. The band broke up in 1950. In the late 1930s, cornetist Lu Watters was playing commercial dance gigs in the San Francisco area.
