Stoned Soul Picnic is the third album by American pop group The 5th Dimension, released in 1968 (see 1968 in music). Early versions of the album had a lyric sheet inserted in the sleeve. Side One. "Sweet Blindness" (Laura Nyro) – 3:27. It'll Never Be the Same Again" (Jeff Comanor) – 3:08. The Sailboat Song" (Jeff Comanor) – 2:52. It's a Great Life" (Denny McReynolds, Karen O'Hara) – 3:08. Stoned Soul Picnic" (Laura Nyro) – 3:30. Side Two. "California Soul" (Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson) – 3:16.
The group received a gold record for their album Stoned Soul Picnic. That album included "California Soul", which peaked at No. 25 in February 1969. Weeks later the group's success broke wide open, with "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" from the musical Hair topping the Hot 100 for six straight weeks in April and May, and another Nyro song, "Wedding Bell Blues", doing the same for the first three full weeks in November. The 5th Dimension performed "Sweet Blindness" on Frank Sinatra's 1968 TV special Francis Albert Sinatra Does His Thing and sang "Workin' On a Groovy Thing" and "Wedding Bell Blues" on Woody Allen's The Woody Allen Special in 1969.
One of the 5th Dimension's finest all-around albums, Stoned Soul Picnic is not only home to the title tracks, but also to the hits "Sweet Blindness" and "California Soul. All three of these songs provide excellent examples of the band's sunny and buoyant appeal. The group was far more than a black version of the Mamas & the Papas.
by The 5th Dimension. Album: Stoned Soul Picnic (1969). I had several Fifth Dimension albums while growing up and well remember the song; these days I have it on my iPod. 5th Dimension tunes stand the test of time, still great to hear. Truly can't say enough good stuff about them. Perhaps some looked down on this song because female voices are espousing the pleasures of imbibing. When the male voice brags about drinkin' lots o' liquor, it is seen as no big deal and a right of passage; the old double standard. Still, the song is a fun, upbeat tune
The 5th Dimension – 1968 – Stoned Soul Picnic. Of course, the songs by Laura Nyro are the best example of this adventurous materia. he title hit and Sweet Blindness sound glorious in this all-digital recording. But that’s just the beginnin. here are great songs contributed by Jeff Comanor ( The Sailboat Song features Ron Townson in a graceful solo), Ashford.
