4. Concerto for violin, cello & orchestra in A minor ('Double'), Op. 102: Allegro. Leonard Bernstein & the Vienna Philharmonic are excellent supporters. The Piano Concerto in D Minor, Opus 15 also receives outstanding interpretation for this brilliant pianist: Krystian Zimerman. Gidon Kremer (Violinist) & Mischa Maisky (Cello) are equally exceptional performers on their chosen string instruments for the other two outstanding compositions also by Johannes Brahms.
The Double Concerto was Brahms' final work for orchestra. It was composed in the summer of 1887, and first performed on 18 October of that year in the Gürzenich in Cologne, Germany. Brahms approached the project with anxiety over writing for instruments that were not his own. He wrote it for the cellist Robert Hausmann, a frequent chamber music collaborator, and his old but estranged friend, the violinist. The concerto was, in part, a gesture of reconciliation towards Joachim, after their long friendship had ruptured following Joachim's divorce from his. Leonard Bernstein and the Wiener Philharmoniker perform Brahms orchestral works. Between 1981 and 1984 Leonard Bernstein recorded nearly all of Brahms's orchestral works with the Wiener Philharmoniker to honor the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth in 1983. For the concertos, Bernstein enlisted the services of some of the finest Brahms interpreters of the time: the violoninst Gidon Kremer, the cellist Mischa Maisky and the pianist Krystian Zimerman.
