There by the Grace of God" is a song by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. It was released in October 2002 by record label Epic as a single from the band's greatest hits album Forever Delayed. The song is noted for the line "And all the drugs in the world can't save us from ourselves", which is an almost word-for-word quote from Marilyn Manson's song "Coma White", which features the line "And all the drugs in this world can't save her from herself"
Bradford invoked the grace of God, and he indicated that he might have been substituted for the malefactor, but the phrasing was quite different. This was the earliest match located by QI, and it was published more than two hundred years after the death of Bradford. It is reported of Whitfield, that on seeing a poor drunkard reeling along the streets, he exclaimed with tears, But for the grace of God, there goes George Whitfield.
In recent times, this proverbial saying is often used without the literal belief in the Christian God's control of all things and is used by believers and nonbelievers alike. The case against Bradford being the source is this: - All of the sources that claim Bradford as the originator themselves ultimately derive from The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. These include an entry in the usually authoritative The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, which cites the DNB.
The loss of sanctifying grace through mortal sin is a supernatural reality; but even those in mortal sin receive actual grace from God that moves them to return to Him: Men may lose charity and divine grace through sin, thus becoming incapable of supernatural merit, and yet not be deprived of all life if they hold fast to faith and Christian hope, an. God calls us out of our fallen nature to higher things - to struggle and sacrifice and, ultimately, sanctification. Nearly five hundred years ago, the Council of Trent made clear that the idea of living out the teachings of the divine law is not an unattainable goal: If anyone says that the commandments of God are, even for one that is justified and constituted in grace, impossible to observe, let him be anathema. Cf. canon 18 on justification.
