Catch a Fire is the fifth studio album by the reggae band The Wailers, released in April 1973. It was their first album released by Island Records. After touring and recording in the United Kingdom with Johnny Nash, Nash's departure to the United States left the band without enough money to return home; they approached producer Chris Blackwell, who agreed to advance the Wailers money for an album and paid their fares back to Jamaica, where they recorded Catch a Fire

Although Catch A Fire introduced Bob Marley to the world beyond his Caribbean homeland, it was not the singer’s first album. Indeed, it wasn’t even a Bob Marley album. Catch A Fire was the fifth album by the group known and billed simply as the Wailers who had been playing and recording together in Jamaica for a decade or more before it was released. It is difficult to convey how little was known about Jamaican music in pre-Marley Britain and America at the start of the 1970s.
Catch a Fire was the major label debut for Bob Marley and the Wailers, and it was an international success upon its release in 1973. Although Bob Marley may have been the main voice, every member of the Wailers made valuable contributions and they were never more united in their vision and sound.
Catch a Fire was the Wailers' and reggae's introduction to the world and turned Bob Marley into a mega-icon of enormous proportions.

Catch a Fire launched Bob Marley's international career, while also cracking the foundation of his band. The Wailers were suddenly famous, despite having initially emerged from the Trench Town slum in Kingston, Jamaica, more than a decade earlier. Unfortunately, the pressures of new fame and industry meddling meant the original Wailers – featuring the cornerstone trio of Marley, t Peter Tosh (born Winston Hubert McIntosh) and percussionist Bunny Wailer (Neville O'Riley Livingston, one of Marley's earliest childhood friends) – would last only one more album. Marley was the charismatic and emotional center point of the group. But Tosh's street-fighting attitude and Wailer's blissed-out mysticism played similarly important roles in their rise to fame. It wouldn't last – and not because Catch a Fire, though widely hailed by critics, peaked at only No. 171 on the Billboard album chart.
