Austrian saxophonist Max Nagl wanted to do a project with American writer/artist Edward Gorey. The latter died before recordings began, but The Evil Garden saw the light of day nonetheless. Nagl selected a handful of the poet's stories and wrote a few instrumental tunes inspired by some of his drawings. The perfection of this match is uncanny.

Edward Gorey agreed in an interview that the "sexlessness" of his works was a product of his asexuality. From 1995 to his death in April 2000, the normally reclusive artist was the subject of a cinéma vérité-style documentary directed by Christopher Seufert. As of 2016, the film has been screened as a work-in-progress; the finished film and accompanying book are in post-production. Eduard Blutig – The Evil Garden (translated from Der Böse Garten by Mrs. Regera Dowdy), The Tuning Fork (translated from Der Zeitirrthum by Mrs. Regera Dowdy). Raddory Gewe – The Eleventh Episode. Dogear Wryde – The Broken Spoke/Cycling Cards. This album was a collaboration with Gorey, who liked previous work by The Tiger Lillies so much that he sent them a large box of his unpublished works, which were then adapted and turned into songs. Gorey died before hearing the finished album.

Edward Gorey has been granted the most remarkable biography, one I believe he could have lived with. What was the likelihood that this singular genius could be restored, with such compassion and grace, within his whole context: Balanchine, surrealism, Frank O'Hara, Lady Murasaki, et al? This is a Dery Gorey book.
Edward Gorey was an American author and illustrator of many books which enjoy cult status due to their cerebral and disquieting drawings. They look like something out of a late 19th century, early 20th century picture book but have a surreal, ominous, sinister atmosphere about them. Some of Gorey's books have been adapted into musical pieces, like 'The Hapless Child' (1976) by Michael Mantler, 'The Evil Garden' (2001) by Max Nagl, 'The Gorey End' (2003) by The Tiger Lilies and The Kronos Quartet and 'The Doubtful Guest' (2006-2007) by Stephan Winkler. His work was an influence on Mark Romanek's music video for 'The Perfect Drug' by Nine Inch Nails, as well as the films of Tim Burton.
