However, it’s not a song but an excerpt of a recitation by Stevie Smith about her poem Not Waving but Drowning, which was released in 1957. This poem is about depression and feeling alone and helpless. Stevie Smith herself had attempted suicide shortly after its release. Nobody heard him, the dead man, But still he lay moaning: I was much further out than you thought And not waving but drowning.
