Riptide" is a song by Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy. It was first released as a track on his debut EP God Loves You When You're Dancing (2013), serving as its second single, and is also featured on his debut studio album Dream Your Life Away (2014). The song was written by Joy, who also produced it with drummer Edwin White. The upbeat indie folk song has been lyrically described as a "coming of age love story" and is known for its metaphors and pop culture references.

James Gabriel Keogh (born 1 December 1987), better known by his stage name Vance Joy, is an Australian singer and songwriter. He signed a five-album deal with Atlantic Records in 2013. He released his debut EP God Loves You When You're Dancing in March 2013. His song "Riptide" was voted number 1 on the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100. Joy released his debut studio album Dream Your Life Away on 5 September 2014 in Australia and on 9 September 2014 elsewhere.

Riptide" sounds like it could be the title of a surf-rock hit from the '60s, but until Joy's release, so song with that name ever hit the Hot 100. Robert Palmer released a song called "Riptide" in 1985 that he used as the title track to his album - the one with "Addicted To Love. Vance Joy started the song in 2008. He recalled to American Songwriter: "One day I just picked up the guitar and started playing the chords for the verse. I had the first two lines but really didn't think much about it.
