San Francisco space rockers Wooden Shjips were such an overnight sensation they quickly sold out of their first three recordings: their 2005 Shrinking Moon for You EP, the Dance, California/Clouds Over Earthquake single (released in 2006 to centennially commemorate the San Francisco quake of 1906) and 2007's Summer of Love EP (a release that celebrated San Francisco anarchist collective the Diggers. while simultaneously benefiting Food Not Bombs).

Together that's six songs and a scant 35 minutes of music, but the compilation contains Wooden Shjips' fullest sounding work. Formed by guitarist Ripley Johnson in the early part of the decade, Wooden Shjips' began by honing in on the mantric drone vibe of bands like Velvet Underground and Pärson Sound.

Wooden Shjips was the self-titled debut album from the San Francisco psychedelic rock quartet that took many in the rock world by surprise at the end of 2007. Previous to that, only those in their region and in the Northwest had actually gotten the opportunity to hear the band play its brand of droning, repetitive, yet dense and hooky freak-flag rock live, and those fans snapped up all of Wooden Shjips' earlier recorded offerings before the rest of us had even heard of the group.
