The Buddha of Suburbia is a 1993 'soundtrack album' by David Bowie inspired by the four-part television serial of the same name originally shown on BBC2 (itself adapted from the novel of the same name by Hanif Kureishi). Although classified as a 'soundtrack album', the title track is the only song that featured in the programme's actual soundtrack

The Buddha of Suburbia (song). The Buddha of Suburbia" is the theme song to the BBC TV series of the same name, released by David Bowie in 1993. It was re-recorded with Lenny Kravitz for Bowie's album, also titled The Buddha of Suburbia, and inspired by his musical score for the series. The single reached No. 35 in the UK singles chart

The album is the soundtrack to a 4-part serial for BBC2 of the same name written by Hanif Kureishi, and based on his book, The Buddha of Suburbia. The only vinyl issue of this title in the world. The cover art's large dot pattern reveals that the images were enlarged from the original UK CD art but the text is sharp and vector-based, so this isn't simply a blow-up. The typo ("Perfomed by") is intact, as is reference to the booklet (adapted to a two-sided insert). Track numbering has been amended to reflect the two sides of the LP. (Illustrated db Discography)

I wouldn't quite go that far, but it's a remarkably enjoyable album, and it boggles my mind that people reacted favorably to BTWN but mostly ignored this. The most unusual aspect of the album is the slight return of Bowie's artsy-fartsy side, though the tracks in this vein aren't terrific.

The Buddha of Suburbia is a 1993 soundtrack album by David Bowie which accompanied the 4-part television serial The Buddha of Suburbia on BBC2 itself adapted from the book The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi. The album is a soundtrack album, sitting between Black Tie White Noise 1993 and Outside 1995 It was produced and mixed at Mountain Studios Montreux in Switzerland and according to Bowie it took only six days to write and record, but fifteen days to mix due to some "technical breakdowns"6. Larkin, Colin 2011 The Encyclopedia of Popular Music 5th concise ed Omnibus Press. Draper, Jason "DAVID BOWIE - THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA" Record Collector Retrieved 11 September 2017.

David Bowie wrote the soundtrack for The Buddha of Suburbia - the television show based on Hanif Kureishi's novel - but this isn't it. This Buddha of Suburbia is an album Bowie wrote immediately after the soundtrack. Inspired by the memories of the 1970s thrown up by Kureishi's work, Bowie produced his best work for many years. Appearing in 1993, in the middle of a lengthy creative dry spell, The Buddha of Suburbia was a welcome reminder of the man's qualities

The actual soundtrack is unreleased. This is an album based losely on the soundtrack.

This is review for 2LP edition (Made in Italy)Great work.Sounds better than mostly 21st century remaster issue.Happy to have it.

I’ll add that, despite the surprisingly good mastering, the pressing of my cp. is middling. One side is crazeeeeeee off-centered, giving a wavy pitch effect which is especially noticeable on the third and innermost track. Other 3 sides are centered, fortunately. To be expected with grey market, fly by night operations. So don’t much for this; nick a copy if possible. A legit, GZ-pressed ish is almost certain to be included in the next Bowie box, right?
Malaunitly
I agree. I don't normally like to buy unofficial copies, certainly not when legit releases exist, but this is only available on vinyl in this format at the moment. The only Bowie album I didn't have on LP. I got a copy cheapish, but it sounds really, really good. Pleasantly surprised. Just wish the bootleggers had paid a bit more attention to the cover art etc...

CONVERSE
It was the cd era, this record was never released in vinyl other than these unauthorized 500 copies from Brazil, it sounds great but I agree with the printing. So if you want this on vinyl it's your only chance.
Crazy
Please cancel this , see that's a bootleg. Not interested:-)THX
Throw her heart
What do you mean 'cancel it'? These vinyls exist don't they
Gardagar
Lots of bootlegs floating about on eBay for this, by the way, some with a different cover, some based on this cover. Be very wary about buying this one!
Nettale
I know a few people who have purchased the new bootleg. Apparently it's really good quality. I don't tend to like bootlegs usually if theyre trying to appear real but this one's just filling the hole. Why they don't release this on vinyl officially I don't know.
Ballazan
Why has this been labelled as 2016? It was reissued in 2007.
Vudozilkree
If this is an official release, it has to be the worlds poorest release. It looks woorse than a Bootleg with the typo and the pixels on the cover.
Nilarius
apologies, i just noticed your question. i was being overly picky regarding Bowie Legacy. i thought when reading the track information there was a typo in the smallprint but i can't recall what and can't spot it right now. i think there's also a missing running time after one track. i should have used the new The Man Who Fell To Earth soundtrack as an example as it has a typo repeated on the CD and vinyl editions (Gevevieve vs Genevieve), inconsistencies in spelling of Stomu Yamash'ta (vs Stomu Yamashta) and some questionable grammar in the vinyl edition book. As for visuals I'd say the Friday Music issue of "hours..." is officially the worst in terms of artwork to be released under Bowie's name. But the point remains that the Brazilian Buddha LP shouldn't be judged too harshly... they worked with what they were given and until someone like MOV gives it a decent reissue it's the only non-bootleg option for this album. best, matt
Error parents
Hi there. What is it with current Bowie Legacy release?
post_name
not really... typos exist on virtually every new album, including for example the current Bowie Legacy release. the reason for the pixellation is obvious too as this was not a vinyl release anywhere else and thus the art used was CD sized. however, the text is NOT pixellated and thus the art is not simply an enlarged CD but a composite using available elements. Brazilian records are not known for their high quality production values, but there are far worse examples than this from elsewhere.
Kerdana
"Not sure whether this is an official release. Probably not."This IS an official release.
Dodo
It often feels to me that this album is overlooked/dismissed/ignored, which is a shame as it is a class act and earns it's place in Bowie's official release list - it certainly works on it's own and is more than just a 'soundtrack'. The Mysteries alone is worth the admission fee.
