In 1979, Madness recorded their debut single entitled 'the Prince'. Written by Lee Thompson the single was released on the 10th August 1979. Released on the 2 Tone Records labe, the label of The Specials founder Jerry Dammers,l the single spent a total amount of 11 weeks in the UK Singles chart, peaking at number 16. 'the Prince' is a tribute song to Jamaican ska singer Prince Buster, who highly influenced Madness. In fact the band took their name from one of Prince Busters songs, which they also covered on the singles b-side. The song was re-recorded later that same year for the 'One Step Beyond' album. As well as having a distinctively clearer sound, the song had a slight change in lyrics. A further version of the single was recorded at a John Peel session and it is this version that Barson prefers. The B-Side 'Madness' was also re-recorded for the album in a more multi-layered arrangement.
