Album Yesterday's Gone. Yesterday's Gone Lyrics. Look up and you'll see the sunshine, so high above It's goodbye to darkness and welcome back to love Every yesterday it was a nightmare for someone The days they count are coming and the best ones have begun
Loyle Carner cuts an impressively idiosyncratic figure among the ranks of hotly tipped British rappers. His breakthrough came not with a swaggering, self-aggrandising statement of intent, but a 2014 track called BFG, an understated, heartbroken rumination on the death of his stepfather. Not everything on Yesterday’s Gone works: the tougher-sounding No CD is a bit less convincing than the more subdued tracks. But at its best, the music and lyrics complement each other perfectly. That confidence isn’t misplaced, and nor is the glowing expression of maternal pride with which the album ends ( He was and is a complete joy, offers Carner’s mum, at the conclusion of a track based on music written by his late stepfather).
The universe of ‘Yesterday’s Gone’ might be a small one, but Loyle Carner’s scope is far from a tight-knit bunch of arbitrary themes. Yesterday’s Gone is one of the finest debuts you’ll hear for quite some time.
It’s about his family, his friends and his neighbourhood. Yesterday’s Gone’ feels homely and communal. This spirit defines the tracklisting. In a way, ‘Yesterday’s Gone’ soundtracks the fellowship, loyalty and diversity that holds a group of people together. Listeners will quickly realise how much Carner cares for his inner circle. Album opener ‘The Isle of Arran’ certainly wastes no time in getting fearlessly personal. Impacting Authentically. Yesterday’s Gone’ presents Carner as an approachable kid-next-door, and the rapper tries hard not to elevate himself above his audience. Still, there’s no doubt that the LP’s free-flowing sentimentality will turn some hip-hop heads off. It’s easy to imagine Carner being considered too well-rounded or goody-goody for certain ears.
