Iron Maiden's sophomore effort, Killers, is mostly composed of pre-existing material that had been left off the debut, with just a few new additions. It's certainly a better-sounding release than the debut, with new producer Martin Birch beefing up the band's studio presence and lending their instrumental attack a newfound clarity that throws their considerable skills into sharp relief. The resulting instrumental fireworks are what truly make the album tick. That said, there's a much smaller percentage of catalog standards here than on the previous album. Wrathchild" is the standout, re-recorded here with Smith on guitar from an earlier version for the Metal for Muthas compilation. There's a fair bit of unity in the lyrical themes, with a parade of murderers, fugitives, and characters otherwise torn from their roots.
Killers, is a bittersweet album for me. On one end this album introduces the fabulous melodic guitar work of Adrian Smith, on the other end we lose the masterful skill of guitarist Dennis Stratton and the punk powerhouse vocals of Paul Di'Anno. This brutal follow-up to the self-titled debut album, Iron Maiden has definitely earned it's place among metal album greats! Killers features a rougher style than it's predecessor, both vocally and instrumentally. Unfortunately the train ride ends here, Iron Maiden and Killers were the last Maiden albums of their kind. Over time many bands polish their sound and lose their edge, Maiden is no exception. This always has been, and always will be among Maiden's best work!

With Killers, Iron Maiden continued their rise in popularity. Though it wasn’t as successful in the charts, Killers sold four times as much as the self titled album. With Killers, the band retained their NWOBHM sound, except this time combined it with the production of legendary produced Martin Birch. The result is a clearer, much more enjoyable album. Also worth mentioning is Iron Maiden’s new guitarist. Due to musical differences, the band and Dennis Stratton parted ways and Maiden was left without a second guitarist
Iron Maiden’s second studio album found them honing their sound. Original guitarist Dennis Stratton gave way to Adrian Smith, but the rest of the lineup (Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Clive Burr, Paul Di'Anno) remained intact. Another major change came in the album’s production. After being left to produce their eponymous debut on their own, the band began a longtime collaboration with legendary producer Martin Birch for Killers. The album’s cleaner sound was immediately apparent.
