By the Way is the eighth studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. The album was released July 9, 2002 on Warner Bros. It sold more than 286,000 copies in the first week, and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 (their next album would peak at number one). With the accomplished, insanely melodic By the Way, the Red Hot Chili Peppers dive headfirst into the pop realm that their 1999 single Scar Tissue hinted at. They swim around in the same inviting Southern California waters that inspired the Beach Boys, and discover that the incandescent hook can say as much as, if not more than, the testosterone-driven backbeat. By the Way would be notable just for its parade of relentlessly catchy melodies: This Is the Place, Midnight and the karmic allegory Universally Speaking are three of maybe eight tracks persuasive enough to own the radio this summer. Several others venture down unusual alleyways - the suitelike Venice Queen, the Latin gallop Cabron, which advocates peace in a gang-run neighborhood - and two or three, if omitted, wouldn’t be missed.

As the title track from the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ eighth studio album, By the Way reflects the underlying theme of the record-Anthony Kiedis’ love life, and the emotions expressed when one falls in love. To the band’s surprise, their management chose it as the lead single. Guitarist John Frusciante explained, It wasn’t really our decision to put that song out first, but our managers thought it was an exciting song and their enthusiasm convinced us. I guess they thought that it combined the wild part of our sound with the melodic part of our sound.
