The duo Tu Fawning features two established artists from the Portland, Oregon, indie folk scene, Joe Haege of the band 31Knots and singer-songwriter Corrina Repp. Their debut EP, SECESSION, mixes Repp's melodramatic vocals with Haege's richly atmospheric, circus-like arrangements for a largely acoustic, Americanized take on the stylized drama of Portishead.

My roommate pointed me towards Tu Fawning back when they were just a name and a demo recording of "I'm Gone". That was all it took. Wearing out the grooves on that MP3 we knew we'd hit some kind of magic: sparse, spooky, textured with voice and motif. Given a full studio session to expand and embellish the unease of those early demos for the original release, Tu Fawning have only heightened their rich sense of dramatic tension. The songs end up feeling distinctly Gothic, not in the eye-liner-and-angst sense we've had since the '80s, but more in the 18th century literary sense, of mysterious disquiet and bookshelves that spin to reveal previously unimagined intrigue.

Tu Fawning is the new project of Joe Haege and Corrina Repp. The collaboration stemmed from a mutual desire to achieve something outside the bounds of their other projects, 31Knots (Haege) and Corrina Repp. One look at the liner notes finds Haege all over Corrina Repp's The Absent and The Distant, which was released on Mark Kozelek's (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon) label Caldo Verde. This is truly when the ideas for what would become Tu Fawning began to take shape. Under this new moniker, Haege and Repp are able to fully realize their palette of piano, drums, percussion, guitar, vocals and samples. The end result is a hybrid of their own individual sounds coming together, but it feels and sounds so natural - like something more than the sum of its parts.
