The Village Gate has seen amazing talent on its stage over the years, so it’s no surprise to find Larry Coryell there as well, holding court and laying out a smoldering show featuring his power trio, a grouping style that was very in at the time, due to the success. The album was an instant success, and closely followed the path laid down by Jimi’s Band of Gypsys, featuring nearly slashing guitar work, while the infusions of Harry Wilkinson reminds me of both Buddy Miles and Mitch Mitchell, though it’s Mervin Bronson who manages to keep Coryell from simply playing himself off the planet.

Coryell was a member of Gary Burton's seminal fusion combo (presaging even Miles Davis' In a Silent Way) and he recorded a considerable amount of solo fusion as well. This 1971 live recording shows Coryell at his most rock-oriented, perhaps in honor of the then-recent passing of guitar god Jimi Hendrix. Live at the Village Gate finds Coryell and his bass-and-drums combo stretching out on five tunes (including a Jack Bruce cover), merging the brutal crunch of rock with the dexterity of jazz.
