SOLDIER – Defiant (Starhaven Records). Defiant’ sees the return of bassist Steve Barlow after a stint MIA alongside the ranks of founder member and guitarist Ian Alan Dick, hyperactive guitarist Miles Goodman, lock-tight drummer Tim Churchman and vocalist Richard Frost whose engaging lyrics and vocal style, and easy on-stage demeanour, mark him out as a frontman of no mean talent. Money spent on having the album mastered at Abbey Road and on eye-catching artwork was money well spent, and make for the icing on a truly appetising cake.

Also, Soldier remind slightly of England's most famous metal sons (Black Sabbath excepted), though play a more mellow form of heavy metal. I listened to Defiant a long time ago and wasn't gripped by the gentle approach taken by the five-piece. I'll say that the only reason Defiant has not goaded me to say that it's an old fart of an album is because Soldier do a good job in a style I'm not very keen on. No, it's not very exciting unless you're forced to choose your music in subservience to the pacemaker you wear, so don't expect big ecstatic grins or much possibility of air guitaring while listening.

Soldier is the fourth studio album by American rock singer Iggy Pop. It was released in February 1980 by record label Arista. For the album Iggy collaborated with ex-Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock. Ex-member of The Stooges James Williamson was originally hired to produce the album, but a conflict between Williamson and David Bowie (who was assisting as a friend of Pop) over recording techniques led to Williamson walking out on the project.
