The photoelectric effect is the emission of electrons or other free carriers when light hits a material. Electrons emitted in this manner can be called photoelectrons. This phenomenon is commonly studied in electronic physics, as well as in fields of chemistry, such as quantum chemistry and electrochemistry. During the years 1886-1902, Wilhelm Hallwachs and Philipp Lenard investigated the phenomenon of photoelectric emission in detail. Hallwachs connected a zinc plate to an electroscope.

Photoelectric effect. Explaining the experiments on the photoelectric effect. How these experiments led to the idea of light behaving as a particle of energy called a photon. Photoelectric effect. This is the currently selected item.

PDF The photoelectric effect is commonly used as the introductory topic for the study of quantum physics.

The photovoltaic effect is the creation of voltage and electric current in a material upon exposure to light and is a physical and chemical phenomenon. The photovoltaic effect is closely related to the photoelectric effect. In either case, light is absorbed, causing excitation of an electron or other charge carrier to a higher-energy state

However, I've had some really, really fun studio sessions lately! I'm not sure when I'll get around to finishing or releasing the new stuff - could be soon, could be a while, could be never.

The photoelectric effect refers to what happens when electrons are emitted from a material that has absorbed electromagnetic radiation. Physicist Albert Einstein was the first to describe the effect fully, and received a Nobel Prize for his work. What is the photoelectric effect? Light with energy above a certain point can be used to knock electrons loose, freeing them from a solid metal surface, according to Scientific American. While the description of the photoelectric effect sounds highly theoretical, there are many practical applications of its work. Britannica describes a few: Photoelectric cells were originally used to detect light, using a vacuum tube containing a cathode, to emit electrons, and an anode, to gather the resulting current. Today, these "phototubes" have advanced to semiconductor-based photodiodes that are used in applications such as solar cells and fiber optics telecommunications.
