The Cure released their debut album Three Imaginary Boys in May 1979. Because of the band's inexperience in the studio, Parry and engineer Mike Hedges took control of the recording. The band, particularly Smith, were unhappy with the album; in a 1987 interview, he admitted, "a lot of it was very superficial – I didn't even like it at the time. There were criticisms made that it was very lightweight, and I thought they were justified. A single from the album, "A Forest", became the band's first UK hit single, reaching number 31 on the singles chart. The album was a departure from the Cure's sound up to that point, with Hedges describing it as "morose, atmospheric, very different to Three Imaginary Boys. Gabrels also accompanied the Cure on a brief American radio festival tour as an onstage guest guitarist for "Wrong Number".

The Cure frontman was about to step outside the door of his parent’s house in Crawley, West Sussex, and away from the goth-rock troupe he had led to unlikely success across the previous six years. Despite not featuring any singles, Metallica’s third album was the UK rock radio breakthrough they’d been looking for. In 1986, they released one of the best metal records of all time, which dealt with the potency and very nature of control, meshing beauty and raw human ugliness together on tracks like Damage Inc and Orion.

Even The Cure stopped playing it live after a while. After the failure of Boys Don’t Cry, The Cure moved onto different line-up changes and deeper, darker music with the albums Seventeen Seconds and Faith. Tolhurst claims: People have a strange impression of The Cure as po-faced Goths sitting in rooms, crying at each other with candles and bells, or somethin. nd that’s not really us. We took what we did seriously, but we didn’t take ourselves that seriously. And I think that’s the key, because once you start to believe your own myth, you’re in danger. Following the success of their album The Head On The Door in 1985, Fiction decided to release a compilation of The Cure’s singles, titled Standing On A Beach. The collection was accompanied by a re-release of Boys Don’t Cry in April 1986, re-sung by Smith, whose voice had matured in the intervening seven years.

Radio Slave readies a double A-side to mark the 100th release on Rekids this February. Having recently celebrated ten years, the consistency of music on Matt Edwards’ Rekids is indisputable with releases from Nina Kraviz, Mr. G, David Morales, Peggy Gou and DJ Deep to name a few. Aside from his A&R abilities Edwards’ extensive understanding of electronic music is evident in his various pseudonyms. Amongst these Radio Slave is easily his most illustrious and most fitting for the seminal label’s milestone 100th release. I had to make these tracks. Containing all the hallmarks of a Radio Slave production, ‘Another Club’ merges looped vocals with thudding kicks as echoing stabs and infectious hats work their magic. On the flip, ‘Feel The Same’ is a funky slice of Detroit inspired house. Radio Slave Another Club Feel The Same Rekids Rekids100.
