The Picos de Europa ("Peaks of Europe", also the Picos) are a mountain range extending for about 20 km, forming part of the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. The range is situated in the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castile and León. The highest peak is Torre de Cerredo, at an elevation of 2650 m. A widely accepted origin for the name is that they were the first sight of Europe for ships arriving from the Americas.
The name Picos del Infierno (Hell's peaks) is one of the most attractive of the Pyrenees. Only the pronunciation is exciting but the name really to come by the bad weathers conditions of these mountains (strong winds and storms are frequents). The three Infiernos are Western (3073m), Central (3082m) and Eastern (3076m) joined by elegant and dangerous ridge.
Explore Picos de Europa holidays and discover the best time and places to visit. The jagged, deeply fissured Picos de Europa straddle southeast Asturias, southwest Cantabria and northern Castilla y León, offering some of Spain's finest walking country – and some of Europe's most spectacular mountain scenery. The Picos comprise three majestic massifs: the eastern Macizo Ándara, with a summit of 2444m; the western Macizo El Cornión, rising to 2596m; and the particularly rocky Macizo Central (or Macizo de los Urrieles), reaching 2648m.
