An American Trilogy is a box set of three remastered albums by Mickey Newbury recorded between 1969 and 1973 at Cinderella Sound studio, in Madison, Tennessee, alongside an additional album of rare and unreleased recordings, entitled Better Days. It was released in 2011 on Saint Cecilia Knows, in association with the Newbury family and their label Mountain Retreat

Mickey Newbury's "An American Trilogy" makes the no. 2 spot in Spin Magazine's top 10 list of the year's best reissues. SPIN's 10 Best Reissues of 2011.

Mickey Newbury, disgusted with industry politics in Nashville, absconded to the mountains of Oregon, releasing albums on his own label until his death in 2002 (his final record, A Long Road Home, was recorded between oxygen treatments for emphysema). Some of the scene's success can be attributed to Newbury, a Houston native who wrote hits for Tom Jones, Don Gibson, and Kenny Rogers (if you've heard "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", then you've heard Newbury). And yet, "An American Trilogy" reveals Newbury's complex approach to songwriting and album sequencing: Every word or line or stanza or song complements the others and shades their meanings, contributing crucially to the whole.

An American Trilogy is a 1972 song medley arranged by country composer Mickey Newbury and popularized by Elvis Presley, who included it as a showstopper in his concert routines. The medley uses three 19th-century songs: "Dixie" - a blackface minstrel song that became an anthem of the Confederacy; "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" - a marching hymn of the Union Army during the American Civil War; and.

First, do not let the name of the Mickey Newbury box set, An American Trilogy confuse you. The box contains four, not three, compact discs. However, the set does include the trilogy of the pioneering country-rock singer-songwriter’s interrelated classic albums made between 1969-1973 in their entirety (Looks Like Rain, ’Frisco Mabel Joy, and Heaven Help the Child).
