Stay Awake If you’re a fan of dream-pop, shoegaze, love songs, noise-pop, psychedelia, you’ll need look no further than San Francisco’s own Young Prisms. They are young, and as with so many of their generation, they have been labeled slackers. But in the span of a few years, Young Prisms has released 7 inches, splits, and EP and two LPs. So some how through all the haze, they manage to output.

Friends for Now shows what all the fuss was about. Though Young Prisms aren't really breaking any new ground with their noisy, melodic sound that draws heavily from shoegaze and neo-psych, as well as Sonic Youth in their Daydream Nation prime, what they do with their accumulated influences is impressive. The album is loaded with massive-sounding guitars that gather in squalling walls of noise, yet have a lightness about them that helps keep things from getting too heavy

Argueably one of the best shoegaze albums of the early 2000s, multi layers of noise, droning, and some subtle pop structures throughout. Overtime this album will transcend whatever trendy indie world it got caught up in, and hopefully gain some much deserved appreciation. Reply Notify me Helpful.

Eschewing the languorous nature of most shoegazer bands, Young Prisms enter realms of impertinent and concentrated rocking; antonymous to the preconceived notions of the genre. The only minor complaint I have about this album is the consistent effort they put into paying tribute to the genre, while keeping innovations somewhat restrained. Like all of their contemporaries, keyboards shimmer, drums echo, and voices whir only to evaporate, making for a distinctly familiar setting. The band’s main distinction (besides their energetic nature) is the clear dichotomous composition of guitars.

Like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Young Prisms combine a love for late-‘60s wall-of-sound Southern California melody from the slightly psychedelic detour into a head full of sand and with a determination to cover up that sunny vibe with lots of guitar, drums, keyboards, and distortion. The results may make this group’s album louder than that by another of their municipal peers, Film School, but again, the resemblance to early-‘90s shoegazing establishes yet another familiar connection. Friends for Now will please those who seek a blast of fuzz to clear out their psychic miasma. The pedals and boxes are used both on and off on this record, however, as many songs prefer to progress at a steadier rate.
