Luther Russell (born November 30, 1970) is an American musician who has been recording since 1991, initially as lead singer/songwriter of the band, The Freewheelers, who made two albums for DGC and American, respectively. He then went solo, starting with "Lowdown World" (1997), "Down At Kit's" (1999), and "Spare Change" (2001), all recorded while living in Portland, Oregon. It was also in the great northwest that Luther produced many independent records by such acclaimed artists as Richmond Fontaine and Fernando. GalleryBeat Slow Talk Show 3 With Luther Russell. Born in Ramsgate Kent England, I came across the Atlantic Ocean to New York on the Queen Mary. From New York, I wound up in the South Side of Chicago and at the early age of 11, I got my first guitar. My childhood was spent going back and forth from the States to England, which gave me the opportunity to jam with musicians on both sides of the pond. By the age of sixteen, I was touring around Europe and the Midwestern United States. I’ve had the honor of playing and hanging out with some of the most incredible musicians and song writers of the 60’s and 70’s

The band itself has a bluesy, soulful sound that is equal parts Bruce Springsteen and Joe Cocker (the Cocker element would be more fully realized on their second album, Waitin' for George). Lead itarist Luther Russell's songs have the appeal and personality of those by Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson, especially on "Thinkin' 'Bout Your Mother" and the lighthearted "Percilla," a wild tale of a bearded lady in the big top. The overall feel of this record is funky, warm, and both fresh and familiar at the same time.
