The young Paul Hindemith was not long out of the conservatory when he composed the first of what became a series of seven pieces called "Kammermusik" in 1921 for a small orchestra, each featuring a solo instrument in concerto form. He brought to it his rigorous training in counterpoint combined with the irreverent, insouciant tone and instrumentation he had learned playing in dance and musical comedy bands.
