These Funker Vogt remaster CDs from Repo Records are absolute rubbish and should not even be considered "remasters". Yes, FV never had excellent mastering, with very flat bass and muffled highs, at least in their first few albums. But at least the production was tight and well mixed. What was done on these Repo remasters is beyond lazy. No elements were individually dealt with, as is usually the case with a full studio remaster. Instead, the entire master track - vocals and all - was shoved through the sonic equivalent of a meat grinder. Yes, now the kick drums are bassier and the high end is brighter - but there is so much distortion and messiness introduced as a result that it's barely listenable. This aural disaster is very evident on Execution Tracks. I A/B'd this release with the Special Limited Fan Edition (which is sonically identical to the original CD) and it's unreal how bad the Repo release sounds. They absolutely killed any dynamics that used to exist with whatever "enhancement" setting was used in their mastering software. What you gain with the impact of the kick drum thump you lose in the ensuing mess of the mid range and high end. It's like mixing pancake batter with a chainsaw.Do yourself a favor and pass over these 2001 "remastered" CDs and stick to the originals. While the mastering on those really do leave something to be desired, at least you'll have something listenable, and you'll probably do a better job remastering it yourself with a basic equalizer in your audio player of choice.
