Burial is the debut studio album by London electronic producer Burial, released in 2006 on Kode9's Hyperdub label. Considered a landmark of the mid-2000s dubstep scene, the album's sound features a dark, emotive take on the UK rave music that preoccupied Burial in his youth, including 2-step, jungle, and UK garage. Critics have variously interpreted the release as an elegy for the dissipated rave movement and a sullen audio portrait of London.

So close to the end that we can see the beginning.

Burial is the first great dubstep album, legitimizing a style - a generally dark, emotive, and faceless dub offshoot of 2-step - that had thus far been confined to 12" vinyl and the underground club scene.

Burial also sporadically resurrects the 2-step practice of sampling and fucking with female vocalists: On album opener "Distant Lights", a bleated "Now that I meet yo. .drifts from the swirl like Brandy caught on the other side of the looking glass. This is Burial's best trump card: The handful of tracks with sampled vocals stand well above their brethren, possessing an almost manipulative quality of quivering emotional directness.

I said this at the time, pointing to a Megaman solo album as the most likely breakthrough. Then, everything dropped off the map. The tunes that the kids at the back of the bus were playing off their phones were songs that had been recorded before MP3 phones were even invented - "Oi" by More Fire Crew, "Bound 4 Da Reload" by Oxide & Neutrino, like that.

16 users here now. The place for all things Burial. He doesn't play live, and he occasionally releases snippets of songs to radio stations, and then we never hear them again as officially released tunes. submitted 6 hours ago by Backs Please.
